Description

Nolan is headed for Australia is in search of a fresh start which might even include rekindling an old romance.  But as the 727 leaves L A,  he has his first contact with an alien. Also aboard is what seems to be a human-sized praying mantis. Probably not an alien invasion. Nolan puts his experience down some kind of nightmare engendered from exhaustion.

Within days of arriving, and getting some rest, Nolan is in love again, with the beautiful and independent Fiona.  Disturbingly, she is being tracked by a psycho and by a psychic -- who might be the same person.  But Nolan now has allies.  Mostly not human -- but you take what you can get.  The love affair with Fiona does indeed reignite, in spite of bullets and explosions.

Nolan returns to North America, Fiona to be joining him later.  But somehow he has become the go-to guy for aliens with problems. The giant mantis wants to pay him for his help; a despondent lizard-being joins him on a train trip; a gnat-sized refugee arrives from an embattled cloud city.

Fiona finally does arrive -- the wedding ceremony is unusual because none of the guests are from Earth.  Modes of celebration are… different.

Together the two humans create the Bureau of Alien Interactions. An agency so secret that the Government doesn't know it exists.

Once ,Nolan gets pulled into an alien beauty contest, as a judge.  Another time a friend who is a monster-sized jellyfish has a stolen technology problem. Then there is a binary organism who is (who are) in drug withdrawal. There's also the University mathematician who is not delusional no matter what his grad student thinks.  There's an alien artifact in a pyramid in the American Midwest. Then a shipment of contraband locks down the only available portal.  The need for an alternate portal leads to the encounter with a large, nine-legged alien beetleoid in a cavern in the Italian Alps.  Next, Nolan has to get to Amsterdam to meet a four-winged reptilian who is desperate to recover a stolen hoard of diamonds. Meanwhile there could be a microbial infection traceable to Earth. Things almost settle down. So, while still in Europe, Nolan has Fiona join him. They plan a moonlight picnic in the ruins of a French chateau -- only to be interrupted by three gargoyles, soon to be joined by a gaggle of other aliens. Afterward, the two humans attempt to get into tourist mode. But in a visit to a cathedral, Fiona is pulled through a labyrinth to encounter an imprisoned artist who is far from human. Elsewhere in spacetime Fiona meets a horseshoe-crab-like scientist whose civilization is threatened by oxygen-driven climate change. Later on, in a long-delayed honeymoon trip, Nolan and Fiona are in Western Australia where they encounter two aliens with one name.  Back home again, they find that the still-locked-down portal is failing.  It's a doorstop, in an access point that it can't hold open much longer. The entire communication-connection to Earth is at risk from a programming error forty three centuries old. The whole chain of causation has to be traced and fixed before the portal-doorstop destabilizes.

The final chapter "Earth People are Like That" is by a guest artist; a highly evolved millipede.   He has adopted a lot of human literary tropes.  That is to say, he steals from the best; from Shakespeare to Tchaikovsky.  Perhaps also from not-the-best; specifically 1950s American musicals.
